BBS Documentary Interview Collection: Minor Threat

Published 2005

Interview with Minor Threat, conducted in Austin, Texas, on January 30th, 2004. Minor Threat is most known as the creator and co-author of Tone Loc, a "wardialer" program that would connect to thousands of phones looking for carriers, voices, and other surprises in a phone exchange. However, this interview mostly focuses on his memories of both PD (public domain) BBSes and hacking BBSes; a section in the middle focuses on Tone Loc and the challenges associated with the program. The interview starts slowly as we warm up and then moves very quickly.

Jason drove 400 miles round-trip to conduct this interview.

Subject: Great interview.
I wasnt too terribly familiar with Minor Threats work prior to this interview. Why I downloaded it in the first place is beyond me, but I must say it was a wonderful walk down memory lane.

I got into hacking, phreaking and BBSs in the mid-90s and can definitely empathise with some of the issues and memories MT touches upon in this interview. Remember pulse dialing? he says. I couldnt help laughing out loud and thinking how many young people these days might not actually know what it is. Younger hackers & pirates cannot possibly appreciate the notion of broadband as they didnt work their way up the modem ladder. Its even funny to recall the ridiculous politics involved in the scene as early as that, and to know theyre still there is affirmation that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

The interviewer presses more than a couple times about memories of MTs which he either cannot call upon or just doesnt want to share. Staring at a terminal for 18-hours a day has a way of melting ones cortex so once again I can empathise with him. When all is said and done this was worth the time to download and the time to view. Thank you Jason.
